Bankruptcy Chapter 13

Filing Chapter 13 Bankruptcy — Debt Relief

Due to the economic downturn, an increasing number of people in Michigan are filing for bankruptcy these days.

When you have sizable assets, such as a house and a car, and you are behind in your mortgage payments and have credit card debt, Chapter 13 may protect you from losing your home or your car. Filing for a Chapter 13 bankruptcy can immediately freeze any foreclosure action and give you time to pay off your debt in a manageable debt reorganization (debt consolidation) plan.

At our Grand Rapids Hampel Law Center, we have more than 30 years of experience patiently, carefully and thoroughly walking clients through Chapter 13 and Chapter 7 bankruptcy to a fresh start.

Call (616) 534-7522 or (866) 509-5333 (toll free), or contact us online to learn more about how we can help you file a Chapter 13 bankruptcy and rebuild your credit today.

In a Chapter 13 bankruptcy, your secured debt (such as your home mortgage or car loan) and unsecured debt (credit card or hospital bills) are combined into what is called a debt restructuring plan. The plan is organized based on your ability to pay what you owe over a three-to-five-year period. You will also be rebuilding your credit during this time. Even if you are three or more months behind on your mortgage payments, these payments can be folded into the debt repayment plan and paid back over the course of three to five years.

You may be able to have the interest on your car loans reduced. Your unsecured debt may be paid off at a rate that can range from zero to 100 cents on the dollar. Your own specific repayment plan will depend on your unique financial situation at the time of bankruptcy filing.
